spoons * sing a song of sixpence * memories of the sea

Here are some works which were never shown, The ideas began at the Royal Academy Schools in the early 80's where I began working on fruit still life in front of patterned cloths, I was interested in integrating the background and foreground into one surface pattern, with three dimensional foreground elements and flat patterns interweaving.
Later I continued to make a move away from the figurative, away from simply representing the objects in front of me, and in my journey to subvert the observed I stumbled, as though from the wings, on to the stage of the narrative.
The majority of these images have an underlying theme of collapse; collapsed distance, space, time, and object boundaries. The storytelling themes reflect this:  a shipwreck, Alice through the looking glass, memories, the aftermath of murder, pop up cards and nursery rhymes etc etc.
I explored the montage of memory and the nonsensical way in which a field of vision can be collapsed onto a single picture plane.
